Complaints against banks in Florida have shot up dramatically during the economic woes of recent years, as thousands of customers in the Sunshine State have given new meaning to the phrase “take it to the bank.”

Thousands of angry Floridians have turned on their banks amid record- or near-record-high account fees, credit-card interest rates, mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures. Nearly 3,800 complaints have been filed with the Florida Division of Financial Institutions in the past three years, according to data released this week. Most of those — 1,719 — were submitted last year, but with little more than a week to go, 2010 has already amassed the second-highest annual total on record: 1,353. In 2008, by comparison, the agency received 718 complaints. Despite the sharp increase in customers with grievances, state regulators said they hope the decline in complaints this year compared with last is a sign that things are improving for both consumers and the economy.
